Whoa! Dem Arches!

19 Mar

I was watching videos on Youtube (because you know how that goes– one cute cat video turns into a five hour marathon…), and Youtube suggested this video for me. Whoa. Just whoa. This dancer, Isabelle Ciaravola, is gorgeous and graceful. The video of her dancing is amazing, but the thing that grabbed my attention the most was her arches! Those feet point at what looks like 90 degrees! Do you SEE those roll throughs to relevé? She must have the softest shanks and the strongest feet in the world. They articulate as if they have about… 5 more joints in them than the rest of us.

My own feet point acceptably straight– my left moreso than my right. I can get over my box en pointe almost consistently, while my right side is stubborn. I definitely don’t have the desired “banana feet.” How far do YOUR feet point?

Flight of the Dodo – Live on Youtube!

19 Mar

The world’s first ballet inspired by tweets from the web is now also viewable on the web! The Diablo Ballet has put their delightful dance “Flight of the Dodo” on Youtube for all the world to see. Two of my tweet suggestions were chosen, and I flew up to San Francisco to see the premiere live. I hope that everyone else enjoys it as much as I did!

If you’re interested, the video of the entire evening’s repetoire is out, too! It includes the Q&A at the end, and I’m part of it! I show up right around the 1 hour mark, where I tell them my thoughts on how the web ballet turned out. It’s so embarrassing to see myself on video!

Flight of the Dodo

4 Mar

balletinterviewSo this weekend, I had a whirlwind trip back up to the San Francisco Bay Area to see the World Premiere of the first ever “web ballet” by Diablo Ballet. I posted before about this great idea– using social media to crowdsource ideas for a ballet, and allowing the public to participate in the creation of a piece of art. I submitted several ideas via Twitter, and was shocked when I discovered that some of my suggestions were chosen! I just absolutely couldn’t miss this event, so I snagged some airline tickets.

The Diablo Ballet is a wonderful company. They’re small, exceptionally talented, and very friendly. I was amazed at what a big deal they made about me coming up to see the performance. I was greeted enthusiastically and made to feel like an honored guest. I met with their marketing director, Dan Meagher, one of the dancers, Mayo Sugano, and even the choreographer himself, Robert Dekkers. I was also invited to take part in a taped interview for the local news channel– that was definitely not something I was expecting! All in all I felt so involved and appreciated– way to make a girl’s happiness soar!

The ballet itself was absolutely stunning. It was light-hearted, poked fun at itself, and then took a right turn into dark and twisted territory. The idea of being isolated from your species and essentially tortured in the name of science was as heart-wrenching as the movements of the gender-bending “Dodo birds” was funny. To juxtapose the two, and in such a short performance, was jarring in a thought-provoking and constructive way. The costumes were absolutely perfect: little painted mustaches on the “explorers” (the female dancers), and frilly tutus and turquoise scarves on the “birds” (the males). To my boyfriend I said, “Gee, in another life where I am a ballet choreographer, this is just how I would’ve done this piece.”

The other pieces in the set were gorgeous too– “The Blue Boy,” “La Covacha,” and “Pas de deux from Sinuosity” were all fun or gorgeous in their own way. Outside of the “Flight of the Dodo” web ballet, “Sinuosity” was my favorite because I’m a particular fan of pas de deux. It evoked an underwater feel from the dynamic posing and fluid movements– plus was graced with the extreme power and grace of Mayo Sugano, who quickly became one of my favorites.

Overall the entire trip more than exceeded my expectations. To be able to take part in something like this was mind-blowing as an “adult beginner.” Those of us who begin our dance educations later in life are almost never taken seriously, and we never expect to do much performing or choreography work. As an illustrator, I deal with mostly visual arts. Ballet is a way for me to express my creative energy in a physical way, and I take it very seriously as a hobby– but it something that doesn’t get to be expressed terribly often. This was a great chance for me to feel included in something real, and I’m very thankful that the Diablo Ballet reached out and did such an awesome project.

Diablo Web Ballet– “Flight of the Dodo”

28 Feb

I’m excited to announce that two* of my suggestions ended up being chosen for the Diablo Web Ballet I mentioned a few weeks back. How exciting! I’m actually flying up to San Francisco this Friday specifically to see the performance! The title of the piece is named the Flight of the Dodo and came together from quite a few interesting suggestions:

@MangoJMango: The story of the Dodo Bird, birds who can’t fly and became extinct.
@BlondieBallet: Feel of piece: Deliberately ironic.
Susan Weber: Include at least one moment that you hope the audience will find hideously ugly… another evoking awesome beauty… investigate their similarities and differences.
Leslie Udland: Setting: Insane asylum.
Cheyenne Rosenfeld: Initiate movement from shoulder blades.
@JoieArt: Other ideas: The color turquoise.
A hand-written suggestion by 10-year old Mia Fuerte:
“I would love for the dance to be in the safari. The boys will be animals and the girls will be explorers.”

I’m especially fond of the little girl’s written request. I really am enjoying the way that the choreographer, Robert Dekkers, brought the seemingly random suggestions from social media together to form a cohesive idea. Now that takes some skill! Check out the first few days of rehearsal on Youtube:

If you’d like to see the official Diablo Ballet page on the ballet, please click here. Also, my wonderful dance instructor from San Francisco, Carla Escoda of Ballet to the People, wrote a great article on it for the Huffington Post– check it out! I’m very excited to see the performance on Friday!! Thank you, Diablo Ballet, for putting together such a fun event!

*Both Twitter accounts @Blondieballet and @JoieArt are mine– one is my main personal account and one is just for ballet. I would’ve sent all my suggestions through my ballet Twitter, but had a TweetDeck failure that sent it from both.

Diablo Web Ballet

7 Feb

This is a pretty cool concept– Diablo Ballet is using the magic of the internet to help craft the world’s first Web Ballet!

The Web Ballet will be the first dance work developed from suggestions made on the internet,
and will premiere this March. You can participate from anywhere and be involved in the creation of art! Here’s how:

The Web Ballet will be based on the choreographic ideas of individuals all around the world, submitted to Diablo Ballet’s Twitter Page (@Diablo Ballet), and peformed on March 1st and 2nd
in the San Francisco Bay Area. Beginning January 8th, people may use the Twitter hash tag #DiabloWebBallet to suggest:

• Emotion of the dancers (happy, sad, etc)
• Mood of the entire work (intense, lighthearted)
• Dance moves (turning, jumping, specific steps)
• Other ideas

Please create a separate tweet for each suggestion – thank you!

Here are my own ideas that I just submitted:

You can even help vote on what piece of music to use (check out their Youtube page) If your suggestion is chosen, you might get tickets to see the show, and an autographed photo of the work! For the rest of the details, go check out their page!

All Settled in Burbank

6 Feb

It’s official! I moved! I’m no longer in San Francisco, and now am residing in Burbank, California instead. It’s sad because I had to leave my favorite studio and instructor behind, but I’m hoping to find a great new place here! I’m currently without a car so I’ve been limited to something close by. I will either be biking, or relying on the kindness of my roommates and friends to get me around while I finish up my last semester of grad school. I already have a great first prospect, and plan to try out their Beginning Ballet class this Thursday night. Yes, Beginning. I learned my lesson about jumping right into an Intermediate class at a new studio. I won’t make THAT mistake again! Anyway, I’ll let you know how it goes!

If any of you lovely readers have any recommendations for Burbank/Glendale area studios, please let me know! Once I graduate/have a job/etc, I can try studios elsewhere in the Los Angeles area, but I’m kinda stuck here for now.

My art doesn’t leak over here too often unless it’s ballet related…

The elusive J. Rex in full regalia trolling for food.

My life is so weird. :) (If you want to see more of my art, go stalk my Tumblr: Joie’s Scribblr.)

The Mazurka and Pointe Shoes

3 Jun

>>Very slightly broken in Capezio Glisses I was fitted for in 2008.

In class yesterday, we did a Mazurka. It’s quite possibly one of my favorite ballet movements, now! The music was great too– it was quite easy to imagine myself performing on a giant stage with lights, a peasant costume, and everything! That sort of moment is one I live for in ballet class.

I also may have converted another friend into a ballet buddy. I brought her to the beginning ballet class last night because she was curious and interested. For not having done ballet since she was five, she was pretty good at it. She seemed like she had fun too; that’s always the most important part! I hope she joins me again soon. Ballet is always 2x as fun when you have a buddy that keeps you on your toes (pun intended).

A few posts ago I mentioned that I finally got graduated to pointe, and I’ve officially been able to work it into my ballet schedule twice a week, now! It’s just a short bit at the end of my Tuesday and Friday classes, but it’s very gratifying. For the first time since I was fitted for pointe shoes, I’ve been able to use them enough to know what sort of changes to make to them. I’ve learned that I need to loosen the drawstrings and reposition the elastics to work better on my feet. I’m also currently using gel pouches as my padding, but they may not be the perfect thing for me. I still get a lot of pressure on my big toe, so I might need slightly thicker padding there. I feel like beginning pointe is a long string of trial and error until you find whatever works the best for you.

End of Line

30 Apr

A snap of me on stage taken by Iishu Yoh. Look! Look! Shiny things in my hair! ;)

Recital!

28 Apr

I did it! I survived my first solo! For all my nerves and anxiety, the moment I actually got on the stage brought me a brilliant clarity and I just danced. I reviewed the video afterward and definitely noticed some spots where I messed up or didn’t reach hard enough (like my big grand jeté)… but overall it wasn’t terrible. My port de bras is definitely the one thing that I have going for me. If my legs don’t always listen to me, at least my arms do. Haha! And of course my solo burned off all my stage fright so my group dance went off without a hitch– no nervousness at all! I definitely had some issues controlling my balance, and even stumbled a tiny bit in one spot. I guess that’s just the performance aspect of ballet.

I had a huge turnout of friends and classmates from my graduate school come to show their support. I was absolutely floored and elated! One friend even brought me a little bouquet of daisies! I was so happy I could just explode. My school really outdid themselves supporting the dance “department” (it’s really just a section of their campus rec and wellness center) and letting us art students express ourselves in a different way. They had prize giveaways, an art gallery, a professional light guy, pro videographers and photographers, and even refreshments!

Videos and more details coming soon!
